It has not been a secret that the Taiwanese shipping lines have been struggling financially in a very competitive container and shipping market. Most of these companies have been left out of recent mergers and acquisitions by the bigger players. The Taiwanese government has been trying hard to get the owners of the various shipping lines, work together more closely.
Under the impulse of the Taiwanese Ministry of Transportation, and as part of the Taiwanese Governments “Southbound Policy” all Taiwanese shipping lines are now joining forces. By October this year they will be establishing a new Joint Venture company, headquartered in Singapore, to bundle their overseas investments.
The new JV company will include Yang Ming, Taiwan Navigation, TS Lines, TIPC, Tungya Transportation and Chugwa Post, where Yang Ming and TIPC will each hold 30 % of the shares and the rest to be divided over the others.
Through this new JV, the Taiwanese government is looking to strengthen its co-operation with South East Asia, South Asia and Australasia, which is again highlighting the importance of the Intra Asia trade in which also South East Asia plays a key role.
With Oaks Asia we will continue to follow these positive developments for South East Asia.
